VLADIMIR ŠEKS

An exclusive interview was held with lawyer and politician Vladimir Šeks who has been a representative in the Croatian Parliament since the nation’s independence. He was the chief drafter of the 1991 Constitution of the Republic of Croatia, one of the six founders of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), the political party that would lead the Republic of Croatia for years, and former Speaker of the Parliament (2003-2008). He has held the posts of Deputy Prime Minister in the government, acting President of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), and Leader of the Opposition.

Šeks’ insights, historical recollections, and reflections provide the perspective of a key political figure who continues to shape the country’s constitution and its electoral law. Šeks earned his reputation long before Croatian independence. From 1972 to 1981, when Croatia was part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRJ), he worked as a lawyer until his arrest for “hostile propaganda” and “anti-state actions” against communist Yugoslavia. With the help of police provocateurs, he was convicted of enemy propaganda and served 13 months in Stara Gradiška prison. In interview Šeks explains: “Until I went to prison, I was a critic of the Yugoslav communist regime, but while in prison I became a sworn enemy of the communist regime. I took an oath that I would destroy the Yugoslav communist regime and Yugoslavia as a country by any means necessary--with words and speech and dynamite.”

Vladimir Šeks is a giant in Croatian political life who has made his mark in the rich and glorious history of Croatian statehood with the establishment of a free and independent Croatian state, the centuries-old dream of generations of our people.

English-Russian Count NIKOLAI TOLSTOY

The English-Russian Count Nikolai Tolstoy, renowned historian and author of The Ministers & The Massacres, as well as Stalin’s Vengeance, shares his knowledge of the British repatriation of Croatians, Slovenes and Cossacks (military and civilians) on Bleiburg field in 1945. These unfortunate souls had guarantees from the British that the Geneva Conventions would be honored and that they would be protected and transported to American safe zones in Italy. Instead, in violation of international law, they were deliberately delivered into the hands of the Yugoslav and Russian communists, who, without trial, liquidated them in mass slaughters.
